Doing Democracy

Global Doing Democracy Research Project

As we start to get established in preparation for our first online live chat, could we ask folks to do a couple of things, if you have the time?

1) review the content on our website, especially the studies that have been conducted as well as some of the related research that is posted;

2) think about a possible study you might be able to undertake with students, teachers or faculty, and start to catalogue what types of support you might need (please note that we do not have any funding at this time but we can work together to share knowledge, ideas, and resources);

3) update your profiles so that everyone can get a sense of who's involved;

4) please let us know when you will be able to join us for an online live chat;

5) prepare any questions or thoughts that you might have on the Project.

Thanks to everyone for joining us in this Project, and we look forward to the next few steps together.

I looked at the survey and really like it but would appreciate a version for school leaders- principals and superintendents as well- or the word teacher could be changed to educator. What do you think?

I'd love to send the survey to principals I interviewed as part of a project with John Portelli and Ann Vibert. Ghassan would like to use it with principals in Lebanon.

I have invited one other person to join at this point, but will add more.

Thanks again

Carolyn
Hi Carolyn,

Thanks for your interest in the Project. We`re delighted with the initial reaction.

The answer to your questions is YES. A survey of principals would be great. What we would like to emphasize, wherever possible, is that there be some common focus to the diverse research project so that we can do some critical analysis in a comparative way. Lebanon would be a wonderful site for this research.

We are busy planning an online chat, some introductory videos, and a few other resources. We are a little concerned about the Project getting too big too quickly so please ask us if there is anyone else you would like to be invited into the Project. John Portelli and Ann Vibert Ghasson will be wonderful additions to the Project (I very much like John`s work).

We`ll be in touch, and thanks again for your support.

Bets regards

Paul

Dear Carolyn,

what a great idea - in fact I am about to start research myself (Jan 2009) with school leaders comparing their beliefs with their teachers! I think the Principals and Supers might require some specific additional questions such as:
Do you believe it is your role to promote democracy education in your school? How might this be achieved? and so on. If you are willing to have a go at this and share the development with me that would be marvelous! I intend on putting the surveys online in Survey Monkey very soon for comment and piloting. Are you familiar with it - I have a subscription.

Regards

David

As we have a researcher in Israel doing a study in Lebanon would be most interesting for comparison as well.
