The conceptualization and representation of purpose in social studies education, especially when that purpose is Representations of purpose in the practice of teaching social studies. In particular, when those purposes relate to democratic theory and social justice in teaching and learning for citizenship eduction; the roles of economic, social, and political imperatives in teaching and teacher education; technology in social studies and interdisciplinary work in schools and teacher education; Teacher research and learning to teach through inquiry into practice.
My dissertation was about beginning social studies teachers' beliefs about democracy and the relationship of those beliefs to teaching practice. My work includes teachers' beliefs, conceptions, and representations of democratic theory in practice and the role of citizenship education, science-technology-society, and sociopolitical and economic imperatives in teaching. I'm preparing to organize research for 2013 that looks at teacher education and teacher candidates' beliefs and conceptions of democracy in theory/practice/praxis, in the hopes that I can follow them into their first few years of teaching.
